Atlantis students compete at mock trial tournament

Under the watchful eyes of real judges and attorneys, Atlantis students got a first-hand look at how the U.S. legal system works as members of the school’s first-ever Mock Trial Team. The seven-member team, made up of freshmen and sophomore girls, competed in the regional round of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s High School Mock Trial Tournament last month. The Atlantis students and their peers from nearby schools took on the roles of prosecutors, defense attorneys and witnesses and presented a hypothetical case inside a courtroom at the Fall River Justice Center. 360 Fund Gaining Steam

The Atlantis 360 Fund is in full swing as the new year begins. Donations have been steadily coming in since Atlantis launched the annual fund in November. "We know that November and December are busy months for families, and that is why we are so grateful so many people found the time to support Atlantis," said George Jacome, Development Director for the Atlantis Educational Foundation. Atlantis Honored at NEASC Luncheon

Allison Scanlon and Gabriela Birmingham with NEASC Associate Director Kathleen Montagno at Accreditation Luncheon in Boston on December 13 Atlantis Charter School was honored at a luncheon in Boston for receiving its initial accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Atlantis is only the third charter school in Massachusetts to be accredited by the NEASC.  Professional development brings teachers up to speed on new chemistry curriculum Atlantis chemistry teacher Hank Madeira had an opportunity to go “back to school” last month. He and colleague Julia Wilson, content leader for the Atlantis science department, took part in two days of training in Warren, Rhode Island at the East Bay Educational Collaborative (EBEC) to learn the ins and outs of a new “green” chemistry program being implemented at Atlantis. Just in time for the holiday giving season, Atlantis Charter School launched its new Atlantis 360 Fund. Atlantis is seeking support from students, parents, alumni and others who have championed the school as it grew and blossomed over the years. “By making a gift to the Atlantis 360 Fund, you will bring life full-circle,” says Atlantis Charter School Executive Director Robert Beatty. “Regardless of whether you can donate $5, $50 or $500, your gift will give Atlantis students hope and opportunity.  Every gift truly matters.” As a public charter school, Atlantis does not collect tuition. Atlantis Awarded Science Grants

This November, high school students at Atlantis are getting some cool new learning tools in their science classrooms thanks to $30,000 in grants from the East Bay Educational Collaborative of Rhode Island (EBEC). Atlantis was selected to participate in a new chemistry program entitled “A Natural Approach to Chemistry.” The program comes with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, a wide variety of STEM instructional resources, as well as professional development for Atlantis teachers. “STEM education is vital in preparing our students for the demands of higher education and the work force,” said Robert Beatty, Executive Director of Atlantis Charter School. ACS Receives Initial NEASC Accreditation

Atlantis Charter School received its initial accreditation from the prestigious New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), becoming one of only three charter high schools in Massachusetts to receive this recognition. The Committee on Public Secondary Schools voted to grant Atlantis initial accreditation into the Association for its high school program during its meeting on June 24.
